With the introduction of Sky HD+ to the household, I have been investigating how to get the most out of it using the latest geek tools.
The best example I found is how to set up programmes to record when you aren’t at home.
There are 2 ways.
- Using the internet at www.sky.com
- Using our mobile phone, or in my case my iPhone.
Using the web is fairly straightforward, as long as you have registered your box to use the service, and registered on the sky web site. It uses the sky card number and your mobile number to “connect” the two. Using a slick TV listings EPG on the web, merely find the TV show you wish to record. Click the Remote Record button, confirm and you are done! The program must be at least 30 minutes from starting, and there is no way to use the series link, but there is no need for your telephone line to be connected, as it uses the magic of your satellite dish, and the recording is set up almost immediately.

More fun though, is to use your iphone and an app called TV Plus priced 32.99 on iTunes. Again, launch the app, find the program (which can be tricky, as there is no search, and the EPG is broken down into genre, not a straightforward list), and click record. The iPhone method is far more productive, especially as you can be at work , when you suddenly realise that you have forgotten set up your recording of “Lost”. No problem, whip out your iPhone, and “hey presto” you are done! Again, though, no series link.

Just in case you have yet to buy an iPhone (17 million sold so far – where have you been?), apps can also be downloaded for “other” makes of phone, and you can even SMS sky to set up a recording (but this costs 25p a go). Both methods above are free!
