My first was a ZX81 kit. Worked for many years and is STILL working! I did replace the keypad. Then I got a TS2068 (USA ver of the Spectrum) then I adapted a SPECTRUM ROM to it. I built a ton of hardware stuff for it. Disk drive interdace, connection to an RGB monitor, Video capture card, Serial interface, Even a text to speech box. You name it. BTW, it is still working too. I got into the QL and messed with it for a while. The Micro drive was it’s real failing. The power supply was not so hot either. I fixed that. I then went into IBM compatables and DOS. I still dabble with the older stuff as it was a time when computers were truly FUN. You had to learn about them to really enjoy them.

Just wanted to drop you a note to thank you for mentioning Boingo on The Big Show. I heard you mention it on your show, but was driving at the time and completely forgot about it once I got home. Anyhow, it sounds like exactly what I need when I head over to the UK this summer. Because I have Verizon service here in the States, my phone isn’t compatible with UK service. So I think I’m going to go all wifi for the trip. It may just work.

Hello, i have a apple macbook pro and my internet is sky broadband with sky router, i have bought an epson printer that can work as wirless. The printer works fine when attached via USB cable but when i try to set it up wireless it just won’t work, i have tried all the options as per the manual to set it up apart from the entereing s PIN number into the acsess point, as am not sure how to do that ! Any help grateful

I love your podcast. Please keep it up! My teen-aged daughter found this video on Youtube which may amuse you and other gadget-crazy folks. We found it very amusing at our house, as I sometimes resort to turning off the router in our house to ensure people sleep. As well, the standing rule is that all cellphones get recharged on the kitchen counter (out of ear-shot) so as to eliminate midnight phone calls, email checking, texting or web surfing.

I’m not a iPhone person, I prefer my iPod touch and a cheap mobile but a friend almost had kittens telling me about his latest purchase for his iPhone4, a dual sim case, he said it was great for his work sim and personal sim;

This is a great podcast, no doubt, and I think we all agree on that point. Lots of interesting tech news, geek stuff and its truly a great podcast. However can it be more reliable PLEASE? We know and are fully aware that the presenter is doing this as a hobby, does not get paid for it etc etc – and that’s appreciated by all listeners I am sure. But, its never published on the same day – ranging from a sat, sun, mon, tues or as in this case prob wed or may be not at all this week? I wonder whether it will be possible for it to be more reliable please? Also I thought that it was a bit off that the last 2 episodes were advertised as 27/30 mins for example, only to realise that week before last, a whole 10 mins was dedicated to silence in between the theme tune and something similar happened last week. David – we love the podcast; but once something is out in the open and an expectation is created, it’s frustrating when that expectation is not met – particularly on the reliability front. I hope we get to hear from you soon and may be you can clarify for us WHEN you hope to publish the podcast during the week and whether it will be a WEEKLY podcast for about half hour in DURATION as advertised? Thank you for the episodes so far.

For sometime was updated regularly which was great although in the last few weeks, it’s gone backwards. Is it the sun and good weather which is the reason for lack of podcasts?? I have considered Plasma, but they seem to lack quite a few features (freeview HD, internet, etc), although to be honest, I use a macmini plugged into the TV, and already own a Freesat HD recorder.

I have owned a 32inch Toshiba 100hz LCD TV for 3 years now, and have never had an issue with flicker or blurring.

Mind you, I haven’t paid for my new TV yet, so there is still time for me to change my mind!

Hi David,

Regarding the LCD TV hunt – did you ever consider a Plasma TV instead of an LCD?

The reason I ask is that I am thinking of getting a new TV too – and it must be capable of showing sports with no irritating ‘flicker’ (and certain members of the family watch iCarly – although I’m guessing that will be equally as irritating on Plasma or LCD…).

From the demos that I have seen it would appear that Plasma TVs give a much better picture when showing fast moving sports than LCD TVs which can appear ‘jerky’. Mind you, I haven’t compared one to a 100Hz LCD TV as yet.

Have your investigations revealed any disadvantages with Plasma TVs that I am not aware of? I’ve only just started looking into all this so I just wondered why you are set on an LCD. Apologies if you did mention Plasmas in the podcast – if so I missed it (it was late at night when I listened!)

since you are going away on holiday I thought you might be interested in this brilliant free iPhone app and service. I don’t think you have reported on it before.

Glympse is a free app for the iPhone and other platform which allows the user to send an invite directly from the iphone via email, SMS, Twitter or Facebook, to allow people to track his position for a set period of time between 15 minutes and eight hours of the time the message is sent . Following the link in the message leads the viewer to a map of the phone’s current GPS position which updates in real time and if the sender decides also shows speed, direction and destination.

Each invite is viewable only by the recipient and the map window times out when the time window selected by the sender expires. This is a perfect way for friends and family to follow your progress on a long journey or even commuting to work.

Another techy item you might want to look at is power company SWALEC’s new tariff – iPlan. This is apparently priced at their basic rate and gives you a free real time usage meter with LCD display along with PC software and an online account with various tools to monitor, analyze, and forecast your electricity consumption.

The meter is a piece of kit similar to the ones you can buy and has a transmitter that clips to your fuse box cable and a LCD display connected to it by radio that you can position anywhere in your home and displays your real time electricity usage.

The error message is:

VPN connection
You were disconnected by the communication device. Try
reconnecting. If the problem continues, verify your settings.

I live in two location (Folkestone and London) it works in Folkestone but not London. I have in both locations Virgin Media 10mb package (London D-Link route – wifi “n”
Folkestone I can’t remember but I know it is not “n”)

In London I tried using my Apple Airport Express route but that don’t work either.

I am at a loss!

I have started to uses the ibVPN on the iPad and it is wonderful but I have been unable to get it to work on my MacbookPro (Snow Leopard upto date). I have follow your instructions. Try for 2hours on all 3 vpn services (us1.ibvpn.com, us2.ibvpn.com, us3.ibvpn.com).

The odd thing is that the iPad work in my local coffee shop wifi but not on my home wifi. Is there a setting I have switch on that is brokening the connection.

Just wanted to say how nice it is that (despite the fact that you are very polite) you dont start the podcast with an apology – anymore – and it has not happened for a very long time…which can only mean one thing: the podcast is truly consistent! It’s great. My only gripe in the past was this; and at the time it was disappointing. However thanks for your efforts to keep it absolutely regular, either with show notes or for show notes to follow later. Either way, the fact that it is now a reliable podcast has made a huge difference and certainly adds to the strength of this unique podcast.

You asked for suggestions for a new router. I suggest the AVM Fritz!box 7270, which I use. It does everything, or almost: built in VOIP, DECT, wireless printing, NAS, built in multi line answer machine. For example I have it set so when away all calls to my home landline are routed via VOIP to my iPhone etc. There were a few initial issues but these were all sorted out with the last firmware update. The latest beta firmware even supports IPV6.

I am another listener who complained a lot about the podcast not being regular. Also commented on the fact that when the sun comes out the podcasts disappear (it became the regular reason for not doing a podcast) and for a while the tech/geek stuff seemed to disappear too. Anyway mate its really good to note that the podcast is now consistent and full of geek goodness. Good on ya mate for keeping the podcast regular and for covering some ‘real’ tech news/themes. The podcast is back to its best and long may it continue.

Thanks for another interesting podcast – well in advance of the actual date!

I know I am one of the listeners, who wrote (complained!) about the podcast not being as regular as I would have liked. However, just wanted to comment on the consistency that has been shown in the recent past, which is really appreciated. Doing a podcast, in advance of the pre-set date due to the fact that you would not have been able to do it otherwise, shows real commitment to the show and to the listeners. Just wanted to say thank you once again for your efforts.

Also some time back, another listener had made a comment about the podcast not being as ‘tech/geek’ as it used to be – and I kind of agreed at the time. However, again, the podcast appears to have been freshened up, with lots of tech/geek and interesting material being covered every single week.

The podcast is now consistent, full of tech/geek stuff and is certainly going from strength to strength. Really hope you keep up the good work David.

Hi my mum was bought one of these for Xmas and I have been converting all her old albums onto disk. It has only skipped across one LP but I found it was just because of the amount of dust that had built up on the LP. After a quick clean it was fine. The sound quality isn’t great but didn’t really expect it to be anything like CD quality. I have had some problems transfering from the “ez vinyl/tape converter” programme to iTunes and labelling each album/track is very boring! Overall its not too bad.

Just wanted to leave this comment on your blog to support your latest move of publishing the podcast and show notes separately (in response to another comment to the contrary I saw on the blog) and to set out the reasons why I think this is a great idea.

Considering the fact that you are really doing this out of interest and in your own time, I think, we (as listeners) need to make a decision about whether we would like weekly podcasts with notes to follow, or whether we would like the whole thing and understand that the podcasts will not be regular. I know, I would definitely like weekly podcasts with show notes going up later, particularly if doing the show notes later helps.

I listen to quite a few tech/geek podcasts and pretty much all of them are co-hosted or have guests on them etc. I really like the fact that yours is not co-hosted. I mention this here, because, none of what you say is lost in the midst of banter or a joke – which happens when podcasts are co-hosted. Everything is so clear with an element of light-hearted humour thrown in as well. My point is: even if the show notes go up later, the podcast is so well done and clear, I personally feel I can go and have a look at the websites, gadgets, apps from just listening to the podcast. Show notes can help later…

I hope ‘I confess I’m a Geek’ listeners will support this latest move, in your attempt to keep the podasts regular. This is such a unique and great podcast, that I think we should assist in helping it to continue and grow – and be realistic with our expectations of the podcast at the same time.

Talking about last week’s World Cup themed podcast I must confess that not being a football fan I was a tiny bit bored at times but then, well, it is only once every four years and now I trust there will not be another World Cup themed show until 2014.

A couple of points occured to me following this week’s show. The National Rail app is excellent and I use it myself but there is a free alternative – Thetrainline (http://www.thetrainline.com/tools/index.shtml) – which is very nearly as good.

I have just bought a JuicePack style battery pack for my iPhone 3G S but at just $35 (USD) including shipping from DXExtreme (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.20778) it is quite a bargain. DX also sell a variety of spares and add ons for the iPhone and now the iPad at crazy prices. However, their shipping times are usually anything up to a month from Hong Kong. Still worth it when you consider that the Juicepack is some £60 + shipping. The only other downside is that you can’t sync when the iPhone is in the case due to Apple patent of the sync dock interface.
Maybe battery boosters might be an idea for a future show, subject to what SJ announces on Monday…

You mentioned upping the podcast before providing the screen notes. I can see the reasoning behind this but I always like to go to the episode notes while listening. Yes, I could always just hang on a day before listening but that would be too much of a wait.

Whatever has happened to this podcast? Used to be really good with real tech/geek stuff. Now it just comes across as being lazy with some last minute stuff cobbled together. A whole podcast on football songs this week on a tech/geek podcast and no mention of at least gadgets for world cup..?-mentioning it ok, but a whole podcast? C’mon! -then telling the listeners that this will continue and if you don’t like it – then tough. C’mon mate – you are turning listeners away from the podcast. Can you please focus on the real geek/tech stuff? And what has happened to the weekly podcasts? Surely you can’t keep repeating the lovely British weather as an excuse for not doing a podcast on a weekly basis. Pretty disappointing

Please can you confirm if this would work for my purpose. I have a Bose ipod speaker, but my iphone cannot be connected to the Bose speaker (error message shows on iphone).
I thought if I could get an extension lead that had a female ipod connection at one end to go on to the bose dock connector, and at the other end a male iphone connection to go into the iphone,
I would be able to use the Bose Speaker without connector for my ipod
and with connector for my iphone.
The connector would need to allow charging and playing including video.
Would be grateful if you could let me know if this connector would work, as ipods and iphones (for some unexplainable reason) do have different connections.

In case you have not already covered it a suggestion for a feature for the show would be WAZE. This is an social networking/ navigation app for the iPhone and other mobiles which has just been ported to the UK iPhone. Users upload mapping data as they drive along which goes onto the WAZE database for other drivers to use. Likewise, traffic incidents, RTA’s and mapping corrections can also be uploaded. Waze is just starting up over here but in the USA it is massive.

Your review of the Humax HDR was excellent and I when I return home on Tuesday I will relisten when in front of my Humax since there was info in your review I was not aware ofx. I will be buying my first HD TV this week to with the Humax and get full advantage of it so it is particularly important that I get the best from it.
A quick item you might like to mention for the benefit of UK iPhone users would be how to open a USA based iTunes account. Since many useful free apps such as Dragon Dictation, Dragon Search, IMDB are not available in the UK store it is useful to be able to switch to a US account to get them. You can easily switch from a UK to US store account. Of course to purchase apps in the US store you will need a valid US visa card or else use iTunes vouchers.

Thanks for another great show. I am looking for your Humax HDR review next week as I myself bought one of these devices about a month ago and have been very satisfied with it. The only slight issues I have with it is that the EPG is a bit clunky and (for me) hard to read and there is no facility to customise it. As you know the Humax works in two modes: Freesat and Non Freesat and it is not possible to combine channels from both modes into the same Favourites list. This means that to access a non freesat channel means having to go to the settings menu and change from Freesat to Non Freesat and then scroll through the list to find the station you want – there are a few stations there worth the effort Sky News etc. You know, of course, that you can now access iPlayer directly through the Humax HDR now.
Anyway, thanks again for a good show and please keep them coming!

I bought a Marware case in white about a month ago. About 2 weeks in it stared taking the dye from my jeans. and now looks really grotty. I tried washing it and even soaking paper towels in bleach onto it but it still very cleaned up.

Have now got the Bose Companion 3 speaker system for my iMac – What cracking pieces of kit! How can such a dynamic full sound come out of just two little desktop speakers and a base unit?

I fully recommend this Bose system for the Mac. I got mine from a Bose shop in Braintree at a special offer price of £179. Pricey I admit, but you get what you pay for!

I am in the same situation as you. Had the unit for Christmas and tried recording a couple of LPs. After a while the needle just skips tracks. I put a 5p on but this made little difference. I then put a £1 coin on and this caused the needle to strip vinyl from the track! I wondered if their was any adjustment on the arm but I can’t find any. Has anyone got any solutions?

I was also bought one of these for Christmas and I’m having exactly the same skating problem as Tom. The few seconds’ worth of music before the needle shoots towards the centre of the record is also incredibly scratchy and very tinny, as you say. I’ve tried it with several excellent quality pieces of vinyl but to no avail! Back to Maplins with it – hope they’ll do a refund.

No I haven’t that issue, have you tried a penny stuck on the head?

I do feel the sound quality is a little tinny on this unit, and has been used where there absolutely no CD or MP3 equivalent to the lp!

although I do own a decent quality turntable, I was given an Ion Contour for Christmas, and the idea seems sound so gave it a whirl. However….the needle simply skates across all my (good condition) vinyl. Did you have any similar problems?

One important correction though — SD means anything less than 2GB. SDHC means 4GB and above. Recent cameras can use SD or SDHC. Actually, cameras as recent as 3 years ago can use SDHC. So if your wife’s camera is recent, it’ll definitely take SDHC card. In fact, take a look at this page:

Cracking little piece on the Bose speakers for the iMac. Have just setup my first Mac computer (iMac 24″) and what a machine really pleased with it, only let down the sound side! On reading your little review above will definitely ‘sound these out’. They look good too from the picture, cant have naff looking gear around the stylish iMac!
